Authors for Sustainable AIG

Literary authors, by IAG ethical and respectful of intellectual property.

Last April, at the initiative of the professional organisations that are part of the Conference of Writers’ Associations, the following declaration entitled “For a sustainable IAG” was disseminated among writers and translators, with which literary creators demand from the Administrations and Platforms the application to the uses of content by writers and translators subject to copyright and,  therefore, protected by the Intellectual Property Law, the principles of authorization, remuneration and transparency.
The author organizations and the undersigned writers and translators consider it essential to have effective legislation that guarantees them. A basic piece for a sustainable and ethical development of the new social contract, in which the value of our work must be reflected in the necessary leadership of the Public Administrations through dialogue, negotiation and agreement.

FOR SUSTAINABLE GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

For years now, there has been a need for policies in line with the Sustainable Development Goals that address, among others, respect for human rights, including copyright.

However, the arrival of digital services obscured this need, leading to the veritable plundering of our work by way of fait accompli, giving them legal cover or using our rights as a bargaining chip against other financial interests, thus intensifying the decline in the work of writers and translators and the deterioration of the common cognitive and cultural heritage.

This plundering or expropriation of our rights is speeding up with the development of generative artificial intelligence (GAI). The work of GAI developers continues to be performed on the principle of “anything goes”, which is not sustainable. Building software using our work as raw material and then imposing a business model on us to enjoy this new infrastructure is both unfair and abusive.

In view of the lack of respect for the work of writers and translators, we request that:

  • The essential goods for the structuring of society, which include our work and the social values implicit in it, be protected through decisive, transparent and cross-cutting public action.

  • The obligations to seek authorisation, to remunerate and to provide sufficient and detailed information to developers be established as the only way of developing GAI software in the same way that unwaivable principles are established in the development of other products that affect citizens. Without clearly established and respected rights, they disappear.

  • The promotion of a new social contract that “whitewashes” the unauthorised use of our work in the development of GAI software by deed not be accepted. To this end, Public Administrations must not implement or use GAI software that has not been developed with full respect not only for our rights but also for the privacy rights of citizens and respect for the environment.

To protect the essential goods for the structuring of society, including our works, and the social values implicit in them.

The obligation to request authorisation, remunerate and provide sufficient and detailed information to creators.

Public Administrations should not implement IAG software that has not been developed with full respect for the rights of authors and privacy of all citizens and with respect for the environment.
